Visual Arts
How do you film a dream, illustrate a fairy tale with clay, photograph
an idiomatic expression? How do you paint a landscape with oil paint or
watercolor, make a limited edition of etchings? Be inspired by the
professional faculty, visiting artists, and exhibitions at the Mercy
Gallery. The visual arts program at Loomis Chaffee is centered in the
Richmond Art Center, which offers professional studios in drawing,
painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, digital photography,
computer graphics, and videography.
Student Artists Receive Scholastic Arts Awards
Three Loomis Chaffee students were honored for their art with
awards in the 2010 Connecticut Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition
and exhibition. Senior Mackenzie Merrick received an honorable mention for her
printmaking, and seniors Susannah Stark and Katharine White took Gold Key
awards for painting and photography, respectively. Susannah and Katharine were
two of just 210 Gold Key recipients out of a pool of more than 1,700 submitted
works.
The competition, which is organized by the Connecticut Art
Education Association, is part of the National Scholastic Art Awards. Created
in 1927, the awards were designed to honor the “creative excellence” of young
artists. Works by top state award winners and Gold Key recipients are entered
in a national competition with an awards ceremony and exhibition in New York
City.
Student submissions are juried by professional artists and
university faculty. A statewide art exhibition at the University of Hartford
Art School’s Silpe Gallery displayed the winning entries.
